HELP

Australians at War is presented in two ways. The first as HTML for those viewers who have a basic computer and internet connection. The second presentation is enhanced for viewers with a newer machine and a 56K and above connection.

HTML
The main sections of this site are stories with text and pictures. For example the Great Search Stories and 'Through My Eyes', feature stories. To enhance your experience of these, the only required plug-ins for the video and audio content are either Apple QuickTime or Microsoft Windows Media Player. Refer to the web addresses below for your free download. Full transcripts of all interviews are available in text format.

FLASH
An enhanced version of 'Through My Eyes' has been created using Flash. This allows for a visually rich format with many more photographs and artefacts. The war game Symbology also uses Flash. Both require a Flash plug-in version 4.0 or later to be present on your computer. You can also download this for free, see the link below.

SITE MAP & HELP
The site map allows you to see a global view of the content. You can choose to jump into different parts of the stories by following a link.

NAVIGATION
The designers have created a graphic style whereby anything that is orange in colour indicates that it can be selected or linked. For example the HTML version uses a small round orange button for indication of a link.

Breadcrumb navigation is located at the top of all HTML pages on the site. It provides a visual link of the path that you have followed. If you select the first link in this list you will trace you path back to the beginning of your journey.

Of the three main plug-ins that this site uses, you need to choose which one is best suited for you and your computer.

STREAMING VIDEO AND AUDIO
The media on this site is optimised for both a narrowband and broadband experience.

- Narrowband delivers a 56K and 100K (ISDN) stream.

- Broadband delivers a 256K stream.

INTERNET BROWSERS
Australians at War is optimised for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers version 4.0 and later.

STREAMING MEDIA

Broken Link
A broken link icon will appear on the page if you do not have either the QuickTime or Windows Media Players installed on your machine. Both can be downloaded for free. See the links above.

Stuttering video
Streaming media data is buffered into your computer in small packets of information. Sometimes these data streams are interrupted, causing a stuttering effect while playing your video or audio. Unfortunately the slower your internet connection the more you will experience this.

QuickTime

Connection Speed
QuickTime allows you to specify a connection speed. Make sure you select a speed that your network can deliver. If you set this too high your player will not be able to deliver the best performance for your machine.

No Vision
If you are viewing QuickTime streaming media in an office environment with network security (ie. a firewall). You need to open your QuickTime preferences and select Streaming Proxy. Pull down the menu bar to Streaming Transport and select: Use http, Port ID 80. Or contact your network manager for advice.

Windows Media Player

No Video
If your video plays audio only and no video, you will need to upgrade your Windows Media player. For systems running Windows 95 and NT you will need the very latest version 6.4 player. Even if you think that you have 6.4 you should download and install the very latest sub-version available form the download link. For Windows 98 and Windows 2000 systems you should use Version 7.
